Qld: Man in court after stand off with police yesterday

A 53-year-old man has been charged after an armed stand-off in which police in Brisbane
were kept at bay for more than two hours yesterday.

JOHN ERIC RIX (Rix) appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court today on six charges including
assault occasioning bodily harm, deprivation of liberty and three firearms offences.

Yesterday's stand-off began at about 2 o'clock (AEST) and allegedly involved a man
armed with a high-powered rifle parked in Edmonstone Road, in the inner Brisbane suburb
of Bowen Hills.

Negotiators wearing bullet-proof vests were sent in and police evacuated the area and
cordoned off two blocks around the vehicle, causing peak-hour traffic chaos.

The stand-off ended when police rushed the man and subdued him, after throwing stun
grenades around the car.

No one was injured in the incident.

Following his court appearance today, RIX was released on bail of his own undertaking
and is due to appear in court again on December 20.

He was not required to enter a plea to the charges.
